Meeting Traceability Requirements in Vaccine Production

Never before have pharmaceutical companies and research institutions reacted as quickly to a new pathogen as they did to the new coronavirus Sars-CoV-2. With the demand to quickly produce and distribute new vaccines, comes the need for effective serialization of the products. Ensuring effective track and trace methods are in place and easily implemented, is an essential tool to prevent counterfeiting and black market activities.

To prevent counterfeit vaccines from entering the market, it is a requirement that every individual saleable unit for production is authenticated. In order to ramp up production of vaccines quickly and easily, the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the Gavi Vaccine Innovation Prioritization Strategy, published a guide detailing packaging traceability requirements for therapeutics related to COVID-19.

Learn in our new eGuide how to meet traceability requirements for different packaging formats. Depending on the customer application, there are three scenarios, applicable in the market, to meet vaccine traceability requirements:

-       Single vials packaged in standard cartons

-       Manual production – vials packed in one box

-       Single vials serialization – direct printing on package
